about

'Portonovo' is the new art-barn rock album by Kloothommel. It was written while travelling and recorded live in a barn in the summer of 2020.

It is about the arrival in a new harbour, a strange place. An experience of the new always coincides with (false) enchantment and (supposed) purity. 'Portonovo' is Portuguese for 'new harbour'.

The artwork of the album is an original botanical drawing of a 'Ravenala Madagascariensis' by Louis Van Houtte from 1875 (Volume 21 of his 'Flore de Serres et des Jardins de l'Europe). As fate would have it, Louis Van Houtte has a statue in the same city as Kloothommel: Ghent, Belgium.

Alto Mira II: a valley in Cabo Verde. Lyrics inspired by "The Waking" (Theodore Roethke, 1953)
Charabanc Chant: "Is the twisted....?" sentence by Colin Tudge ("The Tree"). This book inspired me throughout the writing of Portonovo
Travelin' Light: an ode to JJ Cale and everybody out there travelin' in the light.
Ravenala: about the Ravenala Madagascariensis.
Freckles Near The Strands: about love.
Tree Arched Back: about growing.
It's Not Where: wherever, whenever.
Pastoral of a Sincere Joan:
Lianas en Bicorp: imagine being in the cave of Bicorp, Spain, and seeing the mesolithic rock painting of a honey hunter harvesting honey from a bees nest in a tree (8000-6000 BC)
Western Land: written on the beach of São Vicente.
